We met Katie Henry of Starting Smart Wellness earlier this year and she is a total gem. Bright, positive, and the kindest spirit. What stood out most to us was the sense of joy she exudes when sharing her knowledge about doTERRA essential oils. Through education, Katie empowers others to be knowledgeable about natural remedies and take more control of their healthcare and wellbeing.

Read on to learn more about her experience with doTERRA, incorporating essential oils in her everyday life, and her multi-faceted business.
Tell us more about your business, Starting Smart Wellness.
Starting Smart believes one can always start fresh on a path towards health, wellness and ability. Starting Smart empowers people to take control of their healthcare. I am passionate about health, wellness and working with children. I am inspired daily by the children, families and individuals I work with. With a love of life and a passion to heal, I seek to inspire others the way my clients inspire me.
How were you first introduced to essential oils? What are some of the benefits you've seen since incorporating them into your own life?
I was introduced to essential oils in general through yoga and then to doTERRA essential oils from my friend, Sarah. I have found grounding and calm in my chaotic daily life. I have not gotten really sick (cross my fingers) since using essential oils. Working with children and running around teaching classes all day, I got sick several times a year for the past 6 years. I finally feel good. I also have more energy than ever even though I am busier than ever. I am able to finally sleep through the night (I have had insomnia and difficulty staying asleep for the past 10 years) and most importantly I am happy and healthier than I could've imagined and I feel empowered and in control of my healthcare.
How long have you been a doTERRA Wellness Advocate? What drew you to that company and their oils specifically? What makes them unique or better than other essential oil options out there?
I have been a doTERRA Wellness Advocate for almost a year now and it has truly changed my life. I have been using essential oils in my personal yoga practice and in my yoga classes as a teacher for the past 4 years. I knew I wanted to use pure and organic essential oils. I thought I was using good oils but then I learned about doTERRA. I looked at the ingredients of the essential oils that I had bought at a health store and realized I couldn't pronounce half of the ingredients. I knew there had to be something better. Thank god, I was introduced to doTERRA by my friend. Their oils are beyond organic. doTERRA Essential Oils are certified pure therapeutic grade and have a significant amount of science to support them. The science behind these essential oils was very important to me. doTERRA are the highest quality essential oils and they are also sourced from where the expert growers yield the best product. What is your favorite thing about sharing your knowledge of essential oils and their many uses to a new audience?
I am very passionate about health and wellness. I love sharing all the benefits I personally have found with essential oils and all the stories of the people I have shared essential oils with. They have touched my life in many ways and have made positive impacts on so many people's lives. The absolute best part is empowering people to have a say in their healthcare. I love talking to a new audience about essential oils and getting people excited about the many ways essential oils can impact their life. Whether it's the oils themselves, doTERRA's vitamins and supplements, skin care, haircare and cleaning products, there are so many benefits of the natural pure certified therapeutic grade products that doTERRA has. There are many ways these oils can have an impact on your life and I love sharing that with people.
How can one incorporate essential oils into their yoga practice? Any recommendations on specific scents that are better for relaxation, rejuvenation, and energy?
Essential oils and yoga are a perfect combination. You can incorporate oils into your yoga practice and meditation practice. Some amazing oils to diffuse in the air while meditating are Sandalwood, Bergamot and Frankincense. Sandalwood is the best oil for meditation due to its grounding and uplighting properties as it still the mind and clarifies thought. Oils that are great for relaxing and oils I use in forward folds and savasana include: Lavender, Serenity (calming blend), Roman Chamomile, Majoram and Vetiver.
Oils that are good for grounding you include: Balance (the grounding blend which I personally use when I am practicing yoga), Clary Sage, Patchouli and Cinnamon. Oils that are rejuvenating include Citrus Bliss, Elevation Oils that are energizing and uplighting (these are oils I use in the beginning of class especially in a morning class) include: Wild Orange, Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit (all the citrus oils), Citrus Bliss, and Peppermint.
Through Starting Smart Wellness, you work with children. Can you share a story of how essential oils have helped one of the children you work with?
At Starting Smart, I work with children for physical therapy. I incorporate essential oils into each client I work with whether it's physical therapy with the child, family's health concerns, enhancing my yoga clients relaxation, or my family and my friends. I have an amazing story from one of the children I work with. This little girl is nearly 2 years old and has a myriad of delays and always seemed to be sick. We had been using essential oils in our physical therapy sessions to help with her tight muscles and improve her circulation. Her mom was also using the essential oils with her other children for their ear aches, anxiety and ADHD. The mom called me almost in tears saying who grateful she was that she had the power to help her child instead of having to rush off the the ER and wait. She told me her daughter (the one I work with) was wheezy and barely able to breathe. Mom was about to carry her off to the ER but then she remembered she had her essential oils. She put some Breathe essential oil (the respiratory blend) on her chest and over her nose for her to breathe in and within a minute the child was able to breathe again. No trip to the ER and the child was able to breathe and slept through the night.
A testament from a friend and former client:
I never thought oils would be the solution to my medical problems and have always relied on medicine. After 26 years of being on constant medication and having to put up with side effects such as dry mouth, not sleeping as well, among so many others; I began to look for other solutions. Katie introduced me to doTERRA and I was of course very skeptical. We as a society have been taught that medicine is the only way to cure or help ailments. However, I don't think that many of us have taken a look back in time and realized that drug companies didn't always exist. I figured, why not! I'll give this a shot. The first time I used Peppermint oil? I could instantly breathe...that meant no more nasal spray. My next and biggest issue was sleep. Who doesn't have issues sleeping? I had major issues and would wake up every 1 to 2 hours per night. I bought a diffuser and oils and began running them at night and I found myself beginning to sleep for longer durations. I am now sleeping through the night if I place the oils on the bottom of my feet. I am 100% amazed what a simple oil can do and how it has drastically changed my life for the better. I can say I am off two of my meds and going to be off three of them in total after I am finished weaning myself off. This has been life changing for me and I could not be more grateful to Katie for introducing me to this wonderful product!
What's your favorite essential oil and what do you use it for personally?
I have several favorites but one of my favorite essential oil is Peppermint. I adore the smell and it has so many uses. I use it on my temples when I have a headache, in my latte for a delicious taste and no stinky coffee breath, rubbing on my stomach when I have stomach pain or nausea, diffuse in the air with some of the citrus oils or basil for focus and energy, and simply opening the bottle and taking a deep breathe in.
